Foliar fertilization in fruit-growing

Since decades  the foliar fertilization is already a fixed component in the general complex of nutrition of strawberry-growing. However, the foliar fertilization is often elected when already visible deficiency symptoms ( e.g., with trace elements like manganese, iron, boron, but also with magnesium etc.) have appeared.

These measures have only a low influence on the yield and the quality. Far more important is to recognize the latent (not visible) lack and to repair it. Here the foliar analysis has proved itself as an aid.

 

Availability of nutrients

Even if the soil is supplied optimally with nutrients, the adequate care of the strawberries with major-, secondary elements and trace elements is not always protected. Many factors limit the availability and admission from the soil, e.g. high pH values in trace elements and low pH values in major- and secondary elements, aridity, cold, soil compressions and/or waterlogging, competition of soil greenings and antagonisms (reciprocal effects) between the elements (e.g., a superfluity of potassium  limits  the availability and admission of magnesium and calcium).

Special nutrient demands of strawberries

The cultivation of strawberries increased strongly in last decades and the majority is cultivated in the open land. As the strawberry is particularly sensitive and likes to decay at the wrong time when it rains, the harvest amount can vary significantly. By appropriate sort choice and cultivation methods, for example with foil covering, the yields can be secured and the cultivation can become premature. Strawberries are sensitive to chloride.

Iron chloroses

Strawberries tend lightly to iron chloroses. Iron deficiency appears by yellowness of the youngest leaves with dark veins. Besides  culture-technical measures (soil structure, hydrologic balance, pH value etc.) you have the possibility to improve the iron care over the leaf. Here the early and regular foliar fertilization with  Lebosol®-Eisen-Citrat GOLD put things right. Lebosol®-Eisen-Citrat GOLD is a particularly compatible  iron foliar fertilizer which  contains iron as well as manganese. There is often a lack of manganese and iron at the same time, therefore this combination presents itself as a foliar fertilizer. . To improve the distribution of the iron on and in the leaf, amino acids are contained in the product, too.

Blossom, fruit setting, yield stabilization

For the improvement of the fruit setting boron and zinc play an important role. For this, Lebosol®-Robustus SC (boron + calcium) and Lebosol® zinc 700 SC are applied  either before the blossom, after the harvest or with new plantations in autumn. In addition, boron reduces the appearance of deformed berries.

Fruit stability, durability

Low contents of calcium in the berry mean bad fruit quality and a decreasing strength of fruit pulp. Treatments with the product free of chloride Lebosol®-Calcium-Forte SC (calcium forminate as a particularly compatible calcium source) raise the calcium content  in the fruit and thereby improves, first of all, the durability. Lebosol®-Calcium-Forte SC proves a sufficient manganese and iron care.

New strawberry plantings

From the plant up to dormancy  the flower buds are formed and so  the profit potential is fixed at the same time.  In this short period an optimal growth is a necessity. Growth disturbances in autumn cannot  be corrected in  spring.

Application recommendations

To avoid stress while planting, for a better root formation and a faster growth and a quick  development  at the beginning, the plants are supported with amino acids and auxins of Aminosol®

It is advisable

  • to dip the plants in a 1% Aminosol®-solution for at least 15 minutes before planting
  • or to cast the plants after planting with a 1%  Aminosol®-solution

For the rise of the resistance and vitality the application of phosphorous  foliar fertilizers (phosphorus  acid) has proved itself. Phosphonates increase the resistance of the strawberries, while they promote the formation of antibodies of the plant against fungal diseases (e.g. Phytophtora). The application takes place directly after the plantation as well as in autumn as a band spraying or pouring procedure
