Iron availability is low on calcareous soils, soils with a high copper content and in soils with high pH-value. Iron deficiency often appears in soils with bad drainage (stagnant water).
Symptoms of iron deficiency
Iron deficiency is shown by yellowing of youngest leaves, pale leaves with darker mid rib or veins.
What is iron important for?
- Activation of numerous enzymatic processes
- Chlorophyll synthesis (photosynthesis)
- Protein synthesis
- Protective function (peroxidases)
- Material transport
Whereby iron deficiency is enhanced?
- High pH value
- Calcareous soil
- Soil with a high copper content
