Potassium (K)

What is potassium important for?

  • Activation of enzymes and coenzymes
  • Protein, photo- & carbohydrate synthesis
  • Energy metabolism
  • Stoma opening function, turgor pressure
  • The transport of carbohydrates and proteins
  • Resistance to dryness, frost and stress

Symptoms of potassium deficiency

Potassium deficiency is shown by necrosis on the apex of the leaf and the leaf-edges, in particular on the oldest leaves. In cereals the resistance to lodging and against diseases decrease. The red colour of fruits gets less intense.

Whereby potassium deficiency is enhanced?

  • Acidic soil (low pH value)
  • Sandy or light soil (leaching)
  • Dryness
  • Heavy rain (leaching) or excessive irrigation
  • Heavy, potassium-fixing clay soil
  • Soil with a low potassium reserve
  • Soil with a high magnesium content
