Calcium (Ca)

What is calcium important for?

  • Stabilisation of the cell walls and cell membranes
  • Correct functioning of cell membranes
  • Membrane permeability (selective passage of substances)
  • Cell division and cell elongation

Symptoms of calcium deficiency

Calcium deficiency is shown by tipburn, leaves rolled inwards, damaged growing points, reduced fruit firmness, bitter pit and low storage potential.

Whereby calcium deficiency is enhanced?

  • Acidic soil
  • Sandy or light soil
  • Soil with a high sodium content
  • Antagonism with ammonia, potassium, magnesium
  • Dryness
  • High nitrogen or potassium content in the fruit
  • Large fruit
  • Strong shoot growth
